San Jacinto sportsfest set on April 22-May 14
SAN JACINTO, now under the leadership of Mayor Rolando Columbres, promises to be another sport central after it successfully launched its first three-week long sportsfest.
Dubbed as the “San Jacinto Mini-Olympics 2006” tat started last April 22, the town’s residents have started to see compete in basketball, volleyball, cycling, lawn tennis, badminton, chess, marathon, table tennis, softball and sepak takraw.
The three-week long event will culminate on May 14.
OgoyAccording to the town’s Vice Mayor Manuel Ogoy, the overall chairman of the sportsfest, the event is aimed at drawing it townspeople from 19 barangays, particularly the youth, to actively involve themselves in sports as a deterrent to the spread of illegal drugs in the communities.
San Jacinto has already produced two international athletes in cycling namely Florante Solomon from barangay Sta. Maria and the latest, Reynaldo Navarro from barangay San Juan who competed in the last SEA Games.
The town’s local athletes also made their marks in the recently concluded IRAA. This year’s IRAA gold medalists in table tennis, Kenny Castro and Emard del Mendo of barangay Capaoay, they will represent Region 1 on this year’s Palarong Pambansa.
“They are the epitomes of our youths, and hopefully through the holding of this sportsfest, we could discover and produce more prominent athletes in the near future to bring more honors for the town, and of course, for our province,” Ogoy said.
The gymnasium and the sports facilities of the town located at the second floor of the public market were recently upgraded by Ogoy. The gym is open to public Mondays to Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.— JAG
