Only ‘small’ party set for bangus festival
FINALLY, no more record-breaking attempts for the Guinness Book of World Records when the fifth “Kalutan ed Dagupan”, renamed “Bangus sa Lansangan”, on April 30 is held.
The executive committee of the Bangus Festival, headed by Councilor Nicanor Aquino, will set up only a 1.2 kilometer grill in 12 stages, a token of its existing 1.007 kilometer barbecue record.
Councilor Aquino said the forthcoming “Kalutan ed Dagupan” will only be a grand reunion of all the people who took part in the previous editions of the Bangus Festival since it was first staged in 2002.
Unlike in past festivals where the city sought to establish a record or break old records, this year’s Kalutan will be very simple but “will nevertheless bring great excitement to the people of Dagupan as well as their visitors,” Aquino said.
Aquino estimated that around 100,000 people will flock to Dagupan to participate in this year’s “kalutan” event on April 30 despite the fact that only a 1.2 kilometer grill will beset up in 12 different stages.
Aquino expressed confidence that the festival will be successful citing the participation of the entire Fourth district of Pangasinan in the activities making the festivity more interesting and different from the previous Bangus Festival celebrations.
This new scheme fueled speculations that the inclusion of the towns of Mangaldan, San Fabian, San Jacinto and Manaoag in this festival may be intended to boost the political plans of Dagupan City Mayor Benjamin Lim to run for congressman in the fourth district of Pangasinan in the coming election, against House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr.
But this was vehemently denied by both Lim and Aquino who said the city government merely wanted to include the neighboring towns in the celebration in order to help promote their tourism potentials.
Aquino said this is the best time to include other towns in Pangasinan in order to enhance their own tourism development.
Local Radio Station Bombo Radyo will again sponsor a free concert. Other major sponsors like Globe and Smart will present other well known artists.
Last April 20, “I” FM station sponsored a concert that brought the popular band Orange and Lemons and Metaphor Band, as well as singers Ara Mina, and Jed Madela to the city.
Aquino admitted that they were not able to get many big sponsors this year compared to last year’s since there are other festivals being staged in the province this month.– aql
