City officials act versus frat wars

Alarmed by worsening fraternity wars in local campuses, an anti-fraternity crime council in Dagupan City was recently formed in a bid to curb the violence spawned by these.

The council was formed during a dialogue attended by Mayor Benjie Lim, Vice Mayor Alvin Fernandez, police chief Supt Ed  Basbas, and University of Pangasinan Executive Director Dominador Rayos, representing the city schools, colleges and universities and non- government organizations.

Officials of the Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities in Region I headed by its president Dr.MacArthur Samson, University of Luzon president; and chancellor Dr. Salvador T. Duque of the Lyceum Northwestern University, also called for the strict enforcement of school regulations to secure the campuses.

In a series of meetings with city officials, community leaders have denounced the worsening atrocities perpetrated by gangs and fraternities preying on professors and students.

In a speech before the city council, Rayos proposed that schools formulate stricter policies that could lead to the dissolution of warring fraternities and expulsion of its members.

He also advocated for the establishment of student affairs offices in all campuses to allow students opportunities to engage in more meaningful and productive activities even as he appealed to the city government to deploy police teams in big schools to help ensure peace and security inside the campuses.

A ranking official of the Commission on Higher Education also called for strict enforcement of a CHED memorandum instructing schools, colleges and universities to put up a Crime Watch unit to protect the schools and students from troublemakers.

The activities of a fraternity in the university belt suspected of being responsible for several hooliganism in the area are now being closely monitored by the local police.

Parents have welcomed the tripartite action by the government and non government groups as a concrete action “to sustain city’s reputation as a peaceful and friendly community.”
