BSL: No politics in Bangus Festival
The mayor is adamant. No politics, he says.
Dagupan City Mayor Benjamin Lim tried in vain to douse water over charges that politics was behind his move to expand the celebration of the annual Bangus Festival to the other towns in the district.
Lim, who has been seen making the rounds of the district, maintains “some malicious minds think it that way…but politics is definitely out.”
Political observers here claim his visible presence in the various towns ostensibly for the activities of the expanded Bangus Festival is a ploy to launch his bid for the congressional seat in 2007 elections against the reelection bid of Speaker Jose de Venecia.
“I’m not fighting JDV (Jose de Venecia) per se. I’m just trying to feel the pulse of the people on many issues”, Lim said.
Dagupeños, in particular, became curious when this year’s festival has included activities that involved other towns in the fourth district like Mangaldan, San Fabian, San Jacinto and Manaoag.
Among the district-wide activities listed are the one-of-a-kind Basketball “Gaymes” Battle of the 3rd kind (participated in by local gays) on April 26; the Bangus Fest King and Queen, a “bikini-open” contest on April 27, Bangus Fest Amazing Race on April 23 patterned after America’s popular reality show The Amazing Race and the local show Extra Challenge covering San Fabian, Manaoag and this city.– EVA
