CALASIAO – Under a new scheme developed by the provincial and local governments, rice production in the province will expectedly increase by next year.

Mayor Roy Macanlalay said farmers here can now acquire certified seeds of hybrid rice through a new partnership between the provincial and municipal governments, and the farmers.

Under the new partnership, the costs of the new hybrid will be shared as follows: 50 per cent of the cost will be shouldered by the provincial government and the other 50 per cent will be shared equally by the municipal government and the farmers.

The mayor said the scheme will be a big boon to small farmers who cannot afford to buy certified seeds of hybrid rice and would have to contend with their old seeds that do not yield as much.

With the hybrid rice seedlings and barring any calamity, the farmers can look forward to a bountiful harvest this year and bigger profits, Macanlalay said.

He blamed the under-production of rice by farmers to their continued planting of the inferior types of seeds simply owing to their lack of capital to buy certified seeds for hybrid rice.

The Municipal Agriculture Office was directed by the mayor to prepare a list of first farmer-beneficiaries entitled to the procurement scheme for certified seeds.- APE
