Some 1,800 indigent Dagupeños were treated last month for various illnesses by a medical mission from New York, USA.

The activity was organized and coordinated by the City Government, the Rotary Club of Dagupan, the Innerwheel Club of Dagupan and the Pangasinan Medical Society.

A dinner-reception was tendered in honor of the 89-member New York-based Philippine Medical Association in America led by its president, Dr. Teofila Malanum-Santos.

“The dinner-reception was our simple way of thanking the medical team for choosing the City of Dagupan as one of the five areas for its mission this year in the Philippines,” said Vice Mayor Alvin Fernandez, RCD president.

According to Dr. Edwin Aguirre, RCD secretary and past president, the medical mission began on Feb. 18 in Mendez, Cavite.

Some 120 of the 1,800 Dagupeno patients underwent surgery with the help of local doctors from the Pangasinan Medical Society and the Dagupan City Health Office.

Aguirre said it was the US-based doctors’ first time to include Dagupan in their target areas in Pangasinan that included Binalonan, Manaoag and Sual.

“Councilor Alex de Venecia who used to reside in New York coordinated the communication of the city with the New York based doctors. The sense of service and dedication and generosity of the members of the medical mission is simply admirable and worthy of emulation.” Fernandez said.
