Mapandan Motocross tilt set April 9
THERE’S a change in the preference for another sports activity in Mapandan in this year’s town fiesta celebration.
Instead of the usual cycling road races that normally see the participation of superstars in Philippine cycling, in the last nine consecutive years, this year will see another cycling competition, but this time powered by a machine – “motocross.”
According to Roland Villegas, an aficionado of this machine-run two-wheeled sport and the reigning national champion in the executive class, the event will be run on April 9 and will be dubbed as the “First Mapandan Invitational Motocross Challenge” to be held at the newly specially built one kilometer treacherous dirt track at barangay Luyan.
Villegas also said that the whole day affair will be sponsored by the municipal government of Mapandan through the initiative of sports buff Mayor Jose Ferdinand Calimlim, Jr. The event will be held under the auspices of the National Motocross Association.
Villegas, the ABC president of San Fabian town, said the event will be divided into 11categories with the pro/open and the 125 pro classes as the main highlights, with more than P100,000 cash prizes plus trophies and medals at stake.
Contingents from the provinces of La Union, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Isabela, Bulacan, Batangas and as far as Bicol region will do battle with the Pangasinan riders. Also joining the races will be the best from Manila led by 2003 FIM-ASIA champion and current national open titlist Glen Aguilar, former champion Jovie Saulog, Kenneth San Andres and Bebet dela Cruz to name a few.
“This will be the first time it will be held in the town of Mapandan and I hope these will just be the beginning,” said Villegas.
He thanked mayor Calimlim for being very supportive and cooperative. Villegas’ two sons, Kyle and Meriel, will join the 85cc and 65cc categories, respectively. Aguilar’s son, Mclean, who learned fundamentals of motocross racing at early age of seven, will participate in the 7-under Peewee class. – JAG
