SAN CARLOS CITY – A suspected failed assassination attempt on the life of Mayor Julian Resuello last week, involving a policeman from Camp Crame, could be portent of a possible tension-filled election in Carlos City next year.

The policeman, SPO3 Juanito Menor, a native of San Carlos City but assigned with the Police Protection Office at Camp Crame, had been accused of attempting to assassinate Mayor Resuello.

The incident happened during a party in sitio Estranghero in barangay Bolingit which was attended by Resuello (and his men) and Menor.

Menor is a security officer on detail with Human Rights Commissioner Wilhelm Soriano, whose elder brother former Mayor Douglas Soriano is being groomed to stage a comeback in next year’s election.

An initial report said that SPO2 Alan Patayan, a security officer detailed with Resuello, foiled an attempt of Menor to reach for his hand gun from his waist ostensibly to shoot the mayor.

No motive for the attempted assassination could be ascertained at presstime.

But Menor, who was reportedly drunk and brought to the San Carlos  City police station, managed to slip past his guard in the ensuing confusion  at the station, boarded a tricycle and has since been at large.

There were indications Menor ran to the house of former Mayor Soriano, then together with a lawyer, went to the National Bureau of Investigation and filed his own complaint against Mayor Resuello.

Menor is now facing a complaint for attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms before the city prosecution office.

Menor, however, retaliated and filed his own complaint against Resuello for robbery, grave threat and assault upon person in authority before the Ombudsman and administrative complaint before the Department of Interior and Local Government.
