ROSALES – How does a governor-wannabe feel the pulse of his future constituents? He plays basketball with the young voters in different towns in Pangasinan.

Sixth district Rep. Conrado Estrella III, a basketball aficionado, said he will consider taking a shot at the gubernatorial seat if he feels that the people, especially the young voters, receive his presence positively.

So far, Estrella, former administrator of the National Electrification Administration, has said he is happy with what he has seen so far, being welcomed heartily in different towns as he went about “feeling the pulse”.

Playing in his own basketball team that plays exhibition games with competing   Sangguniang Kabataan teams in the towns, Estrella said he is enjoying every game and a chance at learning more about the young generations’ needs as well as the local officials’ concerns in their towns.

He said he has also consulted Undersecretary Antonio Villar Jr, considered as Pangasinan’s kingmaker, about his plan who advised him to continue moving around to feel the pulse of the people.

Estrella reportedly has the backing of Pangasinan fifth district Rep. Mark Cojuangco, son of business tycoon Eduardo Cojuangco.

A Nationalist People’s Coalition member, Estrella said his bid in the next elections will depend much on what President Gloria Arroyo’s preferences would be in Pangasinan.

Estrella might be fighting it out with Vice Gov. Oscar Lambino, second district Rep. Amado Espino Jr, and Dr. Jamie Eloise Agbayani who is Gov. Victor Agbayani’s wife, in the 2007 gubernatorial elections.

He said that in case he does not get the nod of the “political gods”, he will seek to retain his seat in congress for a last term.-EVA
