Baguio-born Ballesteros wins Guam-cycling anew
BAGUIO City – born cyclist and defending champion Paul Ballesteros retained his title in Guam circuit racing by ruling the 3rd Annual Jazy Sports Foundation/PIC Criterium Grand Prix Cycling Road Race last Sunday at Tiyan, Guam.
The youthful rider Ballesteros, 18, outsprinted his archrival Fred Gray in the last round of 15 to garner 22 points to even the score of Gray, the leader of the first 14 rounds.
The strong finish of Ballesteros in the last round broke the tie according to the international rule which the organizers had implemented.
The top three finishers of each round of two kilometers per lap were credited with five, three and two points, respectively.
Palau Islands top participant Andy Mereb scored seven points to land third. Homegrown talent Tom Mendiola checked in fourth by earning two points and Yankee seasoned rider Jude Baker placed fifth snatching a single point.
Ballesteros, whosefather is from Pozorrubio and mother from Baguio City, is a member of the Philippine well-known 16- man feared pro-am Pangasinan cycling squad named ‘Pitaki Boyz’ of Jazy Sportswear.
This year’s event, participated in by 40 contestants, was organized by John Frias 111, Tim Armour and Mylene Garcia of the Guam Cycling Federation, the national cycling group of Guam affiliated with the world governing body Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). – JAG
