ALCALA – For Alcalenians here and abroad, it’s the Guinness records and more.

Confident about topping current world records, the organizers announced that the 1,000 grills to be used for this town’s bid for the “longest grill” and “longest barbeque grill” are already sold out.

To ensure its successful quest, this town, according to Mayor Manuel Collado, conducted a dry run yesterday, Saturday (March 25) prior to the actual staging on April 29.

Collado said he wants smooth-sailing on the big day when they officially make the bid for Guinnes Records which is part of their town fiesta celebration.

“Talagang pinaghahandaan namin itong mabuti,
” Collado said. Collado added that the sample grills, about 100 meters long, will be placed in front of the Central School for the dry run with charcoal and pork barbeque from Monterey which is the supplier of the pork need for the official grilling.

The town plans on establishing 3,000 meters (three kilometers) long barbeque grill record over Dagupan City’s 2005 attempt on the same category with its 2.2-kilometer long barbeque grill.

While Dagupeños grilled the famous Bonuan bangus, Alcalenians will grill pork and bangus (milkfish) for the documentation. After the record establishing event, people can grill anything from chicken, hotdogs, vegetables, talaba (oysters), eggplants, among others.

For the longest grill, it will be 150-meter long grill. The current record holder had only a 33-meter long grill, Collado said. But the mayor quickly pointed out that the main purpose of the event is fund-raising through the sale of the grills at $100 each.

The funds that will be raised from the grills proceeds will be handled by a local foundation that will implement projects on health, education and livelihood for the local residents. The buyers were Alcalenians who are residing abroad and who will have their first-ever grand homecoming this fiesta celebration.

An estimated crowd of 20,000 people are expected to join in the revelry. – Eva
