100 Islands quintet dump Region I five
NATIONAL Basketball Conference (NBC) new expansion team Pangasinan Hundred Islands picked up an easy victory against the host PRISAA Region 1 squad in a ‘goodwill match’ last Wednesday held at the Lyceum Northwestern University sports complex.
The newly formed semi-professional squad of the province which yielded a first quarter deficit, 25-16, used their heft and height to outmuscle the amateur boys of head coach Angel Gumarang in the second period, 43-37; maintained their precarious lead in the third, 65-60, and engineered a 18-6 romp in the fourth and last canto to eventually dump the shorter Region 1 Selection, 92-72.
Both teams honing up their skills for their forthcoming big battles, displayed strong intensities in the third period with six-foot-five Melvin Mamaclay leading the treys and two Calasiao stalwarts Terry Torio and Albert Carcha countering effectively.
But the more experienced men of head coach Benjamin da Jose, Jr. outgunned and outclassed the ten-man host squad before half-way of the final period, giving a message to the Dagupeños that the province’s team is not a pushover in the field of national amateur league.
Mamaclay scored a game high 25 points. New recruit Edbert Ton contributed 18 and former MBA cager Umingan born Randy Lopez chipped in 12. Center Jove Sese, power-forward Efren Valdez and point guard Ton Catacutan had 11 points apiece.Torio poured in a team high 20 points for the losing effort. Carcha added 12, 9 points from beyond the arc. Pivot man Jenkins Bucao contributed 11 while wily guards Daryl Panganiban, and Bryan Santillan scored 10 points each and Renato Soriano had 9. – JAG
