MALASIQUI—Vice Gov. Oscar Lambino has thrown his full support behind the decision of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to proclaim a state of national emergency because of the current explosive situation in Metro Manila.

Interviewed by phone, Lambino said the President was justified in issuing Executive Order No. 1017 because of the confirmed plot by a few misguided elements of the military to grab power with the support of some civilians and possibly members of the political opposition.

He said there is nothing wrong with the president’s executive order because the declaration of the state of emergency is guaranteed under the constitution.

The president is empowered to declare a state of emergency in order to stop violence and bloodshed that may affect the people, the vice governor said, adding that she had to do this in order to protect the government and the people.

Lambino pointed out that the situation in Pangasinan and any other provinces in the whole country remain normal and only the situation in Metro Manila “is somewhat explosive.”

“But we hope this uneasy  situation will be over soon because if it  continues, our economy will again suffer, our peso will go down vis-a-vis the dollar and investors will again shy away from the Philippines,” Lambino said.

Kawawa ang mga tao kapag nagkataoon,” he said.

Lambino called on the nation especially the Pangasinenses, to be calm and pray for the country’s continued progress.

Lambino said that had it not been for the repeated attempts by misguided elements of the Armed Forces to grab power from the President, the Philippines would already be sailing smoothly by now.
