Region III eyed as source of counterfeit medicines

REGION III has been tagged as the main source of counterfeit drugs flooding Ilocos region.

This was disclosed by Dr. Reynaldo Jactinto, chief of the standards and regulations division of the Department of Health and officer-in-charge of the Bureau of Food and Drugs.

He said a Central Luzon-based drug manufacturer is distributing fake antibiotics in Region I, citing evidence gathered by his office.

But he said the report is still being validated because there are also reports that it could simply be a ploy of competitors.

Jacinto said that his office will coordinate with both the BFAD central office and in Region III to conduct an inspection on the suspected erring drug manufacturer.

Last year, Jacinto created a ruckus in Pangasinan by alleging that some of the doctors in government hospitals in the province were promoting and dispensing fake drug to their patients.

He reminded health practitioners that under the Generics Law enacted when Alfredo Bengzon was still the health secretary, doctors can only prescribe medicines to their patients but never to dispense or sell the same. — APE
