Police take steps vs. cable thieves

LINGAYEN–Police Provincial Director Alan Purisima vowed to put an end to the rash of cable theft cases victimizing telecommunication firms.

Purisima has asked community residents to help by immediately reporting to the nearest police station any suspicious activities in the streets or along highways of certain people at night.

He said the cable thieves have employed a new modus operandi for stealing big volumes of cables from which they extract the precious copper and sold to junkshops.

Although Purisima believes that some junkshop owners are in cahoots with the cable thieves, he thinks it would not be easy to pin them down since a search warrant would be required to affect a search in their respective premises.

He said he received assurances of support from the telecommunication companies as he urged them to immediately report the incidents.–APE
