The annual and traditional Mangaldan town fiesta bikefest which was almost cancelled will be finally staged on February 26.

According to Johnny Valencia, chairman of the cycling event of this year’s Mangaldan town fiesta, the race dubbed as “Werweran X1 ed Mangaldan” will be done in two categories, the executive and open divisions with a total amount of P43,500 in cash prizes up for grabs plus trophies and medals.

Valencia also said that the executive category starts at 9:00 a.m. across Mangaldan’s municipal hall, passing the neighboring towns of San Jacinto and San Fabian and returns to Mangaldan with a distance of 18 kilometers. The participants have to negotiate the same route thrice with a total distance of 54 kilometers.

Top three winners will receive P2, 000, P1, 500 and P1, 000, respectively, plus trophies. Fourth to tenth placers will be awarded medals apiece.

The open category which will be participated in by top guns in Philippine cycling with a maximum of 60 contestants will negotiate the same route eight times with a total of 144 kilometers.

The champion will pocket the P10, 000 top prize plus trophy; first and second runners-up will net P5, 000 and P4, 000, respectively, also with trophies.

Fourth placer to receive P3, 000 plus medal while fifth finisher earns P2, 000 and also with medal.

Sixth to tenth placers will be given P1, 000 each and all survivors will be given an incentive of P200 apiece.

All prizes will be awarded by Mayor Herminio Romero, town fiesta hermano mayor and municipal councilor Danilo Macasieb, which according to Valencia saved the star-studded affair.  The duo will be assisted by the chairman and some balikbayans.

“This Mangaldan cycling, dubbed as “Werweran” for the last 11 years, is considered the oldest annual event and one of the most prestigious one day bike meets in the country today.

As usual, celebrities in Philippine cycling are coming,” said Valencia. “This is the main reason why we cannot afford not to hold another one this year despite encountering financial constraints. Thanks to the execom chairman, to the mayor and to the townspeople,” Valencia added.

“By all means we have to stage this annual event pioneered by my brother-in-law former Mayor Macario Ydia in 1974, hizzoner Romero quipped. “All systems go for the race,” he said.

The wheel-by-wheel hostilities will be aired live over DZSD Super Radyo 1548 khz AM starting at 9:a.m.
