ALAMINOS CITY– The ISLA Challenge, another initiative to spur greater awareness for the Hundred Islands National Park, was launched by Mayor Hernani Braganza last Friday.

ISLA stands for Inter-School Learning Activity.

The project, intended for the city’s youth and members of the educational sector, is open to all schools from the elementary, secondary and tertiary level forming a team of four pupils/students to compete in English, Mathematics, Science and General Knowledge (History and Current Affairs, national and local).

Braganza formally opened the fun-filled school affair at Plaza Marcelo Ochave last Friday and will be held every Friday thereafter.

This is a prelude to an array of activities lined up for the city’s biggest event of the year, the 2006 Hundred Islands Global Homecoming and the 2nd People’s Fiesta next month.

This year’s educational quiz bee committee is headed by Mrs. Laura Cayabyab, a businesswoman, and Atty. Teodoro Sison, and co-chaired by Dr. Renato Viray, city division superintendent.

Engr. Mario Mabalot, the city’s cooperative officer and former dean of the College of Engineering at Saint Louis University, is the quiz master for the entire duration of the show.

Braganza said the activity is parallel to the city’s Vision of Metro Alaminos by 2015, part of which is the need for a well-educated citizenry.
