Dagupan City – The city of Dagupan seeks to join the ranks of progressive cities in the Philippines when it builds its own Special Economic Zone (SEZ) soon.

The city government plans to set up the project on a 31-hectare accreted land near the beach in barangay Bonuan Binloc.

This was revealed by Mayor Benjamin Lim following a technical conference on the proposed project attended by representatives from various government agencies.

The accreted area that formed part of the public domain was the subject of a Miscellaneous Lease Application by the city government before the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Lim said the area is already the location of the National Integrated Fisheries Technology Development Center owned by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.

Among the projects planned to be set up in the area is the proposed Bangus Processing Plant, socialized housing project for SEZ workers, offices of various regional and national government agencies and an information communications technology park.

Lim said pending the submission of certain documentary requirements, the DENR will soon be ready to approve the city’s application over the area.

He said as soon as the city’s application is approved,”we will immediately get a developer for the project”.

Nicanor Melecio, consultant to the Dagupan mayor, said SEZ will serve as economic engine for the whole coastal areas of the city.
