YMCA Dagupan wins in Milo tilt
The YMCA-Dagupan City struggled against Koi World Cup Champions in the recent “Milo Super Karate Kids Championships” held January 22, at SM Megamall, Ortigas in Pasig City and wrested only one silver and two bronze medals.
The 5-member YMCA-Dagupan City Team had a hard time adjusting to the KOI Rules and resulted in disqualification of two of its veterans’, Jona Reyes and Fidel Salvador Reyes, from the Quarterfinals for their aggressive “skin-touch” to the faces.
Jayson Ramil Macaalay of Special Science Lyceum Northwestern University won Silver in the 14 to 15 boys KATA, and 1st Bronze in the 14 to 15 Boys Kumite (Sparring), while Arnold Tuy of La Sallette won 2nd Bronze in the 14 to 15 Boys Kumite.
The MILO Super Karate Kids Championships, organized by the Association of Advancement of Karate-Do (AAK) in cooperation with MILO Philippines and SM Supermalls, adopted the KOI International rules.
The KOI rules prohibit the skin-touch contact to the face in the 15 years old below, compared to the World Karate-Do Federation which allows skin touch to the face. Hence, in the KOI International rule, they call a penalty and award one point to the opponent once face contact is made.
Other player of the Team is Pamela Kim C. Mencias of University of Luzon.
The other participating teams were: AAK SM Megamall, AAK SM North, AAK Batangas, AAK SM Cebu, Ateneo, La Salle, St. Paul College, UPLB, Gaspee de Las Pinas, USBA Shotokan Laguna, St. James College Batangas, University of Sto. Tomas and San Beda College.
Dr. Enrico Vasquez, head coach of YMCA Dagupan City said that the experience helped the team familiarize itself with the KOI International Rules in preparation for its participation in the KOI World Cup which will be hosted by AAK Philippines.
