Cruz slams Arroyo anew

By January 16, 2006News

If  the Arroyo government cannot even stop illegal gambling for good,  how could it stop graft and corruption, terrorism and smuggling, murders  and massacres?

Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz posed this question after  both the resurgence of jueteng operations in the Bicol region and the planned re-entry of Small Town Lottery were confirmed.

The prelate expressed dismay particularly over the failure of  President Gloria Arroyo to stop the illegal gambling in spite of her and the Department of Interior and Local Government’s huge intelligence funds  at their disposal.

“How on earth could she eradicate poverty and promote economic prosperity? How would she establish political stability, vanquish criminality  and work for social peace?,” Cruz said.

“If she wont even touch any gambling lord, how could her government  go after big  drug lords and key crime lords?” he added.

Cruz said although several task forces have been ostensibly created, many counter moves have been made, numerous claims of success have been  made once too often, “but illegal gambling merrily goes on”.

He said gambling lords continue to enjoy life. The poor become even poorer missing their meals more and more, he added.

He said, “The ever existent, always present and operative illegal gambling in  the country is one of the best arguments that the present  administration is a  big disaster”.

Cruz said STL is financed and operated by the same syndicate of  jueteng lords.

He said it has the same target big-time beneficiaries. It exploits the  same victims   the poor and the ignorant, funded local and national elections before,  he said. –EVA
