The owner of the burned Bugnay Commercial Complex wants an extension of its lease but the city is not inclined to grant it when the lease expires in 2007. City Administrator Rafael Baraan said Don Manolo Uy, chairman of the board of Bugnay Construction and Development Corporation, owner of the complex, went to see Mayor Benjamin Lim and conveyed his desire to rebuild the burned structure.

The company has asked for a five-year extension of their contract with the city government when the same expires in 2007. Uy vowed to bring his own structural engineer to determine the safety and soundness of what to determine the safety and soundness of what remains of the burnt commercial complex even if the city engineer’s office already condemned the whole building. Baraan, however, reiterated that the city government is not keen on renewing its contract with the corporation when it expires in 2007.

He said Mayor Lim and members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod want to convert the area into a park in 2007 to showcase local products, especially bangus. On motion of Councilor Jose Netu Tamayo, the city council unanimously approved the plan to convert the lot to be vacated by Bugnay into a tourism park.

This means it would no longer be used for any commercial purpose. The area used to be known as the Magsaysay Park was a park during the administration of former Mayor Cipriano Manaois and later converted for commercial purposes during the administration of former Mayor Liberato Reyna, Sr. APE
