FOURTH District Rep. Christopher de Venecia hailed the scheduled inauguration next month of a new building of the Region 1 Medical Center located in Bonuan Binloc in Dagupan City dedicated for COVID-19 patients.

The new building will complement the existing facilities at the Infectious Disease Center at R1MC Annex and will soon provide 70 additional beds for people under treatment for COVID-19, said Dr. Roland Mejia, R1MC hospital director.

With the new building, the total bed capacity for COVID-19 patients at R1MC will soon be 190 beds from 120.

Built by the Department of Health from funding made available under the government’s Bayanihan 2 program, it was pursued by De Venecia. The building will also have a COVID-19 dormitory as an added facility.

According to Mejia, R1MC has the biggest admissions of COVID-19 patients among all other health care institutions in Pangasinan since the start of the pandemic.

Dr. Mejia expressed his gratitude to the De Venecia family for their valuable contributions to the growth and expansion of R1MC.

He recalled that when the old hospital was destroyed by a powerful earthquake in 1990, it was then Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. who launched the campaign to rebuild the hospital from the rubble.

It was Rep. Gina de Venecia who authored a law that expanded R1MC from 300 bed capacity to 600 bed capacity, making it as the biggest government hospital in Region 1 and Northern Luzon.

He cited Congressman Christopher de Venecia’s efforts for ensuring the completion of the construction of the new building including the ongoing construction of the first of two seven-storey buildings at R1MC main on Arellano Street.

In another development, De Venecia presided over the inauguration of the newly built SK Teen Center in Barangay Malued in Dagupan City on August 12 along with Vice Mayor Dean Bryan Kua and Malued Barangay Captain Filipina de los Santos.

In that occasion, De Venecia underscored the vital role of the youth in choosing the  next leader of the nation and in pushing for the development of the country’s economy that was slowed down by the current pandemic.

The Teen Center offers services for teens going through depression and needing some counseling and interventions with the help of psychologists from the City Social Welfare and Development Office and the Population Commission.

The Teen Center was established in the former location of the E-Library of Barangay Malued and was equipped with gadgets and printers sourced from donations from the private sector, among them the University of Luzon.

Also in that occasion were DILG Director Marilyn Laguipo, P/Lt. Colonel Louise Benjie Tremor, chief of police of Dagupan; the vice president of the SK regional federation and representatives of the University of Luzon. (Leonardo Micua)
