SP approves resolution urging LGUs to cause giving of security of service to BHWs

THE Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) in its web-based/online session on April 12 approved a resolution urging all local government units to cause the giving of security of service/tenure to the Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) in the Province of Pangasinan.
Authored by SP Member Jeremy Agerico B. Rosario, the resolution stated that, “Barangay Health Workers are indispensable partners of the local government units in the promotion of basic health programs, projects and activities particularly in the barangays.”
As such, BM Rosario caused the sponsorship of the resolution in support of the resolution presented by the Federated Barangay Health Workers Province of Pangasinan, Inc. dated March 27, 2021. The federation requested the provincial board to possibly pass a legislation that may provide them security of service.
“During this period of pandemic, barangay health workers are also in the frontline service helping contain the spread of Covid-19 virus,” the resolution disclosed as it added that “there are times when barangay health workers are being replaced or terminated without due course because they have no security of tenure.”
Expressing deep concern on the plight of the BHWs, BM Rosario said the provincial board can at least seek support from the LGUs in finding ways on how to bring the matter to the Congress for proper legislation.
At present, there are more or less than 14,000 BHWs in the province of Pangasinan. (Ruby R. Bernardino)
