A new dawn… but dark days ahead
EVERY time the country finishes a regular or midterm elections, all local government candidates who won look forward to the day when they can speak with confidence about the new dawn that awaits all. There would generally be expectations about another three years pregnant with possibilities, innovations, and ambitions under their leadership.
But the country is not facing a period of optimism but a period of political conflicts that will be marked by lies and deceptions about alliances and formidable lines of partisanship, depending on how the impeachment trial of Vice President Duterte proceeds and ends.
Even the farthest barangays in communities will find themselves drawn into contentious debates about political personalities as major players in the 2028 elections, while sympathy votes for the temporary release of former PRRD from The Hague grow.
There is no doubt in anybody’s mind that the Marcos Jr. administration will do all to annihilate the Duterte political brand during and after the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. At the same time, anti-Marcos forces are marshalling political forces, testing political waters on the timing for an oust-Marcos Jr. during the impeachment trial.
A period of burning effigies will begin to surface, while face-to-face confrontations between riot police and chanting rallyists organized by the Aquino-Robredo alliance and the Makabayan bloc will be the screaming headlines of both mainstream and social media. These will be competing with legal soundbites from the impeachment court from both the prosecution and defense panels.
Not lost in the minds of the ‘Acquit Sara’ movement is the palpable move to remove Senators Bong Go and Bato dela Rosa before the votes of the senator-judges will be called. The anti-Duterte forces that plotted FPRRD’s flight to the Hague have not shelved the charges of complicity with the former president in his alleged violations against humanity.
The new dawn may have signaled new hopes and lives in our towns and cities, but darker days will undoubtedly cover most of the shining moments in the country.
