There is smoke, but where’s the fire?
GIANT “white and black smoke” again soared high off the coasts of Bolinao, Bani, and Agno, one after the other, as fishermen hauled off an estimated P8 billion worth of shabu off the sea.
While it was not the first time for such a supply to be fished out from Pangasinan’s coast, the volume was huge enough to expect a general alert from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, the Philippine National Police, and the Philippine Coast Guard about the vacuum-sealed contraband. They asked: Where did these come from?
But what was more disturbing was the seeming lack of concern as to where these bags were intended to be delivered. Who expected these – might have been the urgent question.
For such a large volume, the discovery could not be plainly viewed as another smuggling attempt. It had the indications of a foiled delivery to the intended operators of shabu laboratories in the province.
If this discovery were still under the Duterte drug war, law enforcers would have been quick to map out likely destinations of the P8 billion shabu but this wasn’t the case, not under the Marcos administration.
Gov. Ramon Guico III was only quick to join the PNP and PDEA in congratulating and thanking the fishermen who surrendered the well-packed supply found floating in different areas. But he was not heard ordering the law enforcement agencies under his authority to track the would-be recipients.
From the recovered shabu packs, there is no doubt that there is a major illegal drug operation in Pangasinan, and someone is providing protection.
If only to assure Pangasinenses that the local governments are not in any way protecting a suspected grand shabu lab operation, the governor should ask the mayors, local police chiefs and barangay chairmen are to submit certifications that they have no knowledge whatsoever of any illegal drug trading operations in their jurisdiction.
A subsequent discovery of illegal drug operations in their jurisdictions after submitting their certifications will prove that they were protecting the drug operations.
From that giant smoke rising from the sea, there must be fire somewhere.
