2025 Midterm Elections is about 2028

TOMORROW, we go to the polls to vote for candidates who we believe can make a difference in our lives in the years ahead.  Such is the norm for each election – to cast our votes for individuals who we believe can shape our country and our communities for the better in the next three years.

The results of the midterm election tomorrow, however, will not be like other elections in the past. The horse race tomorrow that we speak of is not just about winners and losers, of political leaders in the next three years, but of the period after 2028.

Unknown to many, the congressional and senatorial candidates we will be voting for have already set their sights on their roles in the 2028 national elections.

Immediately ahead of us is an impending national political issue  – whether the scheduled impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte will result in better years or a disastrous immediate political development for us as a country and as a people.

But the campaign at the local level hardly spoke of the impending trial. Not during rallies for gubernatorial candidates, much less for congressional seats, because much of our voters’ attention has been diverted to who gets more out of promised ayudas, the legitimized vote-buying, and from whom.

Even the political rallies of both Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas and PDP-Laban have been reduced to loud anti- and pro-Marcos or Duterte chants, with little or no discussions about platforms for the national agenda.

So while the results of the elections at the local level are just as important and decisive for our communities’ future, we must go to the polls tomorrow fully aware that our newly elected local and national leaders will be playing a pivotal role in shaping our country’s future – within a month of their oath-taking.

It is, therefore, imperative that we do not vote corrupt and incompetent congressmen and senators or inexperienced legislators who can be bought at the drop of a hat to serve a political agenda in 2028.
