Where is God in our politics?

AS the country approaches mid-term elections, both our politicians and their constituents find themselves completely engrossed in talking about what can be expected – largely about how much one can receive from the campaign dole-outs until election day, not about changes in their lives after the elections.

Indeed, how could we see Jesus Christs’ sacrifice in today’s political battles if these are still influenced by how much cash politicians dole out to influence our votes and how much a voter can expect from the opposing politicians.

Easter Sunday should remind us that the Son of God died for us to save us from eternal damnation, not to glorify Him with material wealth and earthly honor.

We need to remember that it is Jesus’ blood and sacrifice that constantly gives us new hope in dealing with our reality, even in politics. And that we can embrace new moral perspectives in politics by simply imbibing what our Lord Jesus Christ has taught us in the Lord’s Prayer.

Each phrase in our Lord’s Prayer invites us to see what’s beyond reality, from full submission to His plan as we humble ourselves in His presence, seeing what is right and must be done right.

Indeed, God is very much with us even in today’s politics. It’s in our prayer:

‘Our Father in heaven’, holy be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven, Give us this day, our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, Amen.”

Let us always call to mind the true meaning of Jesus’ death and resurrection in our lives today.

Romans 8:34: “Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.”
