VP Sara turns the table on Romualdez et al.
AS of last week, there was already a foregone conclusion that Vice President Sara Duterte was going to face the Senate after the midterm elections to decide on her fate as an impeached vice president.
That was last week. Today, its VP Sara asking the accusers to explain why she should be impeached when it was they who abused their authority and wrongly accused her.
This means the congressmen and House Speaker Martin Romualdez who “conspired” to have her impeached with the fourth complaint on February, may kiss their reelection campaigns goodbye to push back the vice president again.
From the initial reactions to the complaint filed by VP Sara, describing her as “desperate” instead of pointing out the weakness of her complaint, it became apparent that the key characters behind the impeachment complaint knew that her complaint has legal basis.
The complaint – the law prohibits the filing of a second complaint within a year from the filing of the first complaint – and as records show, three complaints were submitted for voting, rehashed for the fourth with “rewards” to show that the House of Representatives was unanimous in the decision to impeach her.
Each of the first three complaints filed were, indeed, voted upon. Will the Supreme Court accept it as valid reason to nullify the filing of the fourth complaint?
Possibly, except that there is also one possible loophole for the defense. The first three complaints were never transmitted to the Senate, only the fourth was.
How Speaker Romualdez and his cabal decide to push back VP Sara, the district congressmen would have to delay their reelection campaign actitivities to prove their worth before their constituents and the Supreme Court.
But amid these political conflicts, there is one bloc gaining from it all: the Makabayan – Akbayan bloc that took on the task of being the ‘attack dog’ in the House committees for the impeachment. And today, they couldn’t care less whether Speaker Romualdez succeeds or not because the new battle at the political front already destabilizes the government, the primary goal of the leftist bloc, with a hefty sum of money for their role to boot.
Their reelection as party-lists is assured, while the district congressmen are not, for impeaching VP Sara.
