Inconvenience, the least price to pay

LOST in the din and public discussion in reaction to the inconveniences brought about by the ongoing disruptive construction activities in Dagupan City’s main avenues is the reality that Climate Change is here.

It is a change that irrefutably affects human lifestyles, compelling major adjustments to the serious challenges of wrath of nature. And for as long as our communities refuse to accept this reality, coping with the challenges in months and years ahead will prove to be even more difficult.

There are indicators that the litany of inconveniences being aired daily on social media today as a result of the ongoing massive construction and reconstruction will get worse in the next 10-20 years if our communities resist change because of inconveniences.

The city is not dealing with the usual graft and corruption and the politics that go with it but climactic conditions that impact on people’s lives. The required solutions are expectedly divisive because most everyone have their impressions and perceptions based on their limited personal knowledge of changes in climate, not realizing that the subject is far more complex than what meets their eyes.

As expected, it is our usual cultural “pwede na yan” syndrome that’s getting in the way. It is about the willingness of our communities to accept minor changes for as long our status quo is not disturbed. It is to negate anything that will disrupt comfort and convenience.

But inconvenience is the least price the city residents must pay to avert continuing and worsening consequences to serious challenges to our lifestyles and comfort.

There is every reason for Dagupeños to look forward to a better and more convenient community life once the national government-sponsored reconstruction of the drainage system and elevation of streets are completed.

In fact, if the DPWH had not interceded and intervened with its feasibility studies, the city government can never hope to provide the short and medium term solutions that the residents and business sector are hoping for.

In this regard, the earlier the city residents realize that not even the completion of the DPWH project cannot guarantee permanent benefits for the long term, the easier we can arrive at studied solutions.

For this reason alone, we must and should demand of our local leaders to have the vision and the openness to constantly adopt measures for the medium and long term.
