WHILE the citizenry continues to grapple with the seeming endless rounds of increases in prices of commodities, incumbent national and local officials and political wannabes are already busy gearing for the next political fight of their lives.

The 2025 elections are just around the corner. The bells are already ringing for political noise and mindless claims for one’s political ambitions to begin. This can be seen with the usual barrage of efforts already beginning to make their presence felt not only in social media but with tarpaulins just bearing their names and smiling faces posted innocuously in some corners.

Eyes will again be on the citizenry on whom their fate lies. The incumbents and wannabes will again act and talk like they are the ‘public servants’ that the communities need. They will be conspicuous in social gatherings, patting prospective voters on the back while appearing to be coy about their 2025 political plans.

The year 2024 is the time when the charade begins for the opportunists – the wily candidate seeking reelection, the new candidate seeking to be elected for the first time, and the prospective voter who wants to exploit the situation with demands for appeasement.

But things and hearts must change this year if the citizenry wants the words ‘public servant’ to mean positive changees in lives of people.

It, therefore, behooves the more aware and articulate among the God-fearing young to stand up to the traditional politicos and wannabes and make their voices heard about the kind of political leadership their communities need.

It is time for our young minds to articulate their idealism with impact by articulating social and economic problems and needed solutions. The social media is within their easy reach and they should use it to counter and push back traditional politics. They have to create higher awareness among the gullible and ignorant voters about what public service means, and what should be expected of public servants.

The 2024 is the year for a new, vibrant and positive activism among the young to surface.  It is time for idealism for new moral values, for new voices to be heard, for new and bold ideas to be shared.

Without a doubt, the trapos and political opportunists are ready to meet the challenges in 2025 and continue to make a mockery of the system, and only our articulate and idealist young minds can stop them in their own social platforms.
