Let’s have local debates
NOW that the local campaign has officially started, it’ time to get down to brass tacks.
While we are holding the national and local elections simultaneously, the election that truly matters is the local elections. It is their results that will immediately impact on our communities’ and families’ lives.
In the local level, motherhood statements specific doable programs to be promised by our local candidates whether for governor, congress, mayor, vice mayor or councilor are what should matter. Unlike voting for national candidates who are actually far removed from our daily lives in Pangasinan, the candidates vying for the local posts to serve us are known to us, and, therefore, discerning the credibility and ability of our local candidates to deliver is not too difficult a task.
In fact, given what have already been shared via social media and actual performance of incumbents and wannabes, fake news can easily be ferreted out.
However, voters should watch for the expected attempt of re-electionists and challengers to whitewash their fake news with series of delivery of grocery items and cash during the campaign.
The only way to negate the impact of vote-buying, is for our local Comelec offices (town/cities) to organize at least one debate/forum among candidates for mayors two weeks before May 9, 2022.
Severe jolt
THE political atmosphere got a severe jolt this week when Ping Lacson’s Partido Reporma endorsed Leni Robredo for president in the May 9, 2022, elections. Pantaleon Alvarez, the former House Speaker and a ranking Reporma leader, made the announcement in a press conference in Davao del Norte, with Robredo seated beside him at the presidential table. “We believe that the only realistic option now is to converge with Leni Robredo’s campaign,” said Alvarez. Lacson had resigned as Reporma chairman earlier in the day. “That effectively makes me an independent candidate. No matter what happens, even if we’re stopped by a spear, we will not withdraw,” Lacson said. Robredo has remained second in the latest Pulse Asia survey, with Lacson fifth among 10 presidential bets. “With a heavy heart, we are constrained to consider a candidate (Robredo) other than our first choice (Lacson),” Alvarez said.
