Call to arms for civic, professional groups

SEEK cover!! That order was heard a thousand times during the First and Second World Wars to soldiers manning the trenches in the face of incessant bombing by warplanes in the sky.

That order to health workers at the frontlines of the war vs. COVID-19 couldn’t be more timely at this time when a new surge in the number of cases is being seen in Pangasinan, particularly, in Dagupan City.

While the provincial and city governments have begun stocking up more supplies as part of their contingency plans to meet the new challenges posed by more active cases being rushed to hospitals and isolation facilities, we hope they have included contingency plans for their health workers as well.

No sector would be more vulnerable and susceptible to the faster rate of transmission  of Covid- Delta and Lambda variants, than the health workers assigned to handle treatment of patients. Their welfare and safety cannot be taken for granted nor taken lightly. They need  to be covered literally.

Specifically, it means availability of more PPE’S for constant change during duty hours, mandatory rest hours, access to sufficient health foods and vitamins, and provision of beds with clean sheets in an isolated rest area in hospital. Extra hazard pay translates to appreciation of their personal sacrifices being out in the trenches.

Since not all hospitals would have all the funds to support this contingency for the health workers at risk, civic and professional organizations, neighborhood groups, must step forward to provide the logistics and means to provide the cover for the health workers.

Will they show their true gratitude by putting up their resources where their mouths are?

Olympic houses

WIN an Olympic medal and own your own house and lot.  That’s exactly what four of our 19 Olympians did in the just-ended Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Not only one but two house-and-lot bonuses for weightlifting gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz—one in Tagaytay City from Olympic boss Bambol Tolentino and one in her hometown Zamboanga from President Duterte.  Boxing’s silver winners Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam and bronze medalist Eumir Marcial also got the same P5-million Tagaytay house-package each from Tolentino.  Diaz was also gifted by a billionaire with a P14.4-million condo unit at plush Eastwood Q.C.  Likewise, Petecio got two more houses in her native Davao and in Candelaria, Quezon.  The houses were apart from millions of pesos the four medalists had received as incentives from the government and businessmen like TV5’s Manuel V. Pangilinan and SMC mogul Ramon S. Ang.  Indeed, hard work in sports pays off.
