NTC warns public vs scammers during holiday season

THE National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has warned the public to stay alert against scammers targeting individuals’ hard-earned money ahead of the holiday season.

NTC Ilocos Legal Officer Atty. Ana Minelle Maningding said scammers are more active this time of year when employees begin receiving their bonuses. She cautioned that fraudsters send fake text messages, emails, or online offers disguised as legitimate institutions to exploit the season’s excitement.

“Scammers take advantage of employees’ eagerness to receive their bonuses,” Maningding said. She added that many impersonate bank or government representatives, claiming compromised accounts or offering fake investments and raffle prizes.

Once victims share their One-Time Passwords (OTPs), scammers can access and drain their savings.

Data from the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) showed over 15,000 online scam complaints in 2024, mostly linked to phishing, fake investments, and delivery scams.

Maningding reminded the public to stay cautious and “Block, Ignore, Report, and Delete” suspicious messages or calls. (Ahikam Pasion)
