New Basista public market still in planning stage
THE local government of Basista continues to provide financial aid to vendors who were affected by the fire that struck the town’s public market on May 9, 2025 while plans are underway for the construction of a new market.
In a statement, Mayor Jay-R Resuello said the assistance — specifically intended to cover basic needs like electricity and water, is sourced from the local government fund, several party-list groups, and the Provincial Government of Pangasinan.
“The goal is to help the vendors get back on their feet while working on temporary solutions to ensure the comfort and safety of both the vendors and their customers,” he said.
A total of approximately 300 stall owners were impacted by the blaze.
The damaged market currently remains roofless, and vendors set up makeshift shelters in various parts of the site.
The fire also damaged the adjacent tricycle terminal, which serves as a hub for local transport.
“We are currently preparing the necessary documents for the new public market project,” Resuello said.
Meanwhile, Basista’s local government is also in the process of acquiring a large piece of land to be developed into a new public cemetery, as the current facility is nearing full capacity. (Ahikam Pasion)
