Rosales bans plastic bags, Styrofoam
IN a move to promote environmental sustainability, the local government of Rosales is strictly implementing a municipal ordinance that prohibits the use of plastic bags for dry goods, regulates their use for wet goods, and bans the sale and use of Styrofoam containers.
Under the ordinance, the following are strictly prohibited: selling or providing plastic bags as packaging for dry goods, selling or providing plastic bags as secondary packaging for wet goods, and selling or distributing Styrofoam as food or item containers.
Penalties for violators are: P500 for the first offense; P1,000 second offense; and for the third time, P2,500 or imprisonment of up to 6 months, or both, depending on the court’s decision.
The ordinance also imposes stricter rules on businesses, with the highest-ranking officer of the violating establishment to be held liable, and business permits may be suspended or revoked for up to one year.
Consumers have been advised to start making a habit of bringing eco-bags, baskets, or reusable containers when shopping. (Eva Visperas)
