THE National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) Region 1 issued a stern reminder to meat vendors that those found violating proper handling practices will face hefty fines of up to P200,000 as prescribed under the Meat Inspection Code of the Philippines.

Dr. Orlando Ongsotto, NMIS-Ilocos regional director, further said violators could lose their business permits.

One of the key requirements for vendors, especially those selling frozen meat, is the installation of adequate refrigeration facilities to ensure that the products are safe for consumption.

The NMIS, in cooperation with local government units (LGUs), closely monitors compliance through municipal market supervisors and inspectors.

Ongsotto added that the NMIS conducts free monthly seminars on Proper Meat Handling, with sessions held on the first day of every month at the NMIS Region 1 office in Urdaneta City.

The seminar operates on a first-come, first-served basis, with limited slots for only 25 participants per session.

Meanwhile, the sale of “double dead” pork, also called bocha, in Region 1 has been effectively curbed, according to Ongsotto, due mainly to strict regulations enforced by LGUs.

He also noted that LGUs encourage the trade of fresh pork products, which boosts the local economy. (Ahikam Pasion)
