DA: No active ASF cases in Pangasinan

By June 16, 2025Business

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) confirmed that Pangasinan is now free from African Swine Fever (ASF), with no active cases remaining since the last recorded case in January 2025 that was immediately contained.

Dr. Alfiero Banaag, chief of the DA-Region 1 Regulatory Division, also said biosecurity measures are strictly being enforced to prevent the recurrence of the viral disease that has affected the pig industry.

Blood samples are continuously being taken from pigs in areas without new ASF cases under existing ASF protocols.

The blood samples are then sent to the laboratory for testing. If the results are negative, an official report is submitted to the municipal or city government, provincial government, and DA regional office to serve as a basis in attesting to the rehabilitation of the hog industry in the area.

However, the DA called for continued vigilance as the risk of ASF increases during the rainy season, based on past observations.

Banaag pointed out that one of the main reasons for the spread of ASF was the weak immunity of domestic pigs caused by stress that made these more susceptible to diseases such as ASF.

DA  advises hog raisers to continue to implement strict hygiene measures  in their yards and pens to prevent ASF infections. (Kim Gealogo)
