Bayambang LGU, CENPELCO crack down on illegal connections

THE Bayambang local government and the Central Pangasinan Electric Cooperative (CENPELCO) launched a wide-scale disconnection operation against all illegal connections, particularly the so-called “jumpers” installed to tap power from streetlight posts.

The campaign launched by CENPELCO and the municipality’s Internal Audit Services, and Accounting and Engineering Offices which targeted barangay streetlights, was triggered by a suspicious spike in the local government’s electricity bill.

In a post on June 10 on the town’s official Facebook page, it said that during the inspection, it was discovered that numerous barangays had illegal connections or jumpers tapped into streetlight posts all the way to the town center or Poblacion.

The local government said the problem stems from a lack of proper monitoring by some barangay officials, allowing unauthorized connections to be installed, many of which had allegedly gone undetected for a long time or were simply ignored.

To address this, a new policy was issued making barangay officials accountable for their own electric consumption, including that of their respective streetlights.

According to the local government, this operation is more than just a response to rising bills — it is a firm move toward correcting systemic issues and upholding fairness and order in the community.

Savings generated from reduced electricity costs are expected to be redirected to other essential municipal projects. (Eva Visperas)
