MBTF vows to unclog traffic bottleneck in Bonuan area
DAGUPAN City Mayor Belen Fernandez vowed to find a solution to the daily traffic gridlock in the Bonuan area, especially during the rush hours in the morning and afternoon, which has exasperated commuters, traders, students, and workers over the years.
After discussing the issue as among the top priorities of her second term in office during the podcast The Punching Duo on May 17, Fernandez and Public Order and Safety Office (POSO) chief Arvin Decano went to Bonuan to observe for themselves the situation and come up with the most feasible solution to minimize the traffic jam.
Representatives of POSO, the City Engineering Office, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and other national government agencies will discuss and formulate a comprehensive traffic plan for the Bonuan area.
The mayor said unless the gridlock is resolved soon, tourists will be discouraged from visiting the Tondaligan Ferdinand Park, positioned as the hub of tourism in Dagupan City and will be further developed with the construction of the General Douglas Mac Arthur Memorial Museum, a skateboard park, and an eco-tourism park following the full closure of the Bonuan dumpsite.
The city’s efforts to make the Bonuan Blue Beach as a top recreation area, where aqua sports facilities are already in place, and which the city intends to further develop as a surfing destination as well as the One-Bonuan Pavillons will be worthless if the traffic gridlock in Bonuan will not be addressed, Fernandez said.
Among the immediate temporary solutions being mulled is the deployment of more POSO traffic enforcers in the Bonuan area, strict enforcement of a no-parking policy, and clearing of obstructions put up by people for commercial purposes.
A more long-term solution proposed by the DPWH is the construction of a parallel road leading to Mangaldan through a lot near Silverio’s Restaurant, then through Barangay Mamalingling. (Leonardo Micua)
