LGUs told: SSS registration required for business permit

LOCAL government units (LGUs) must require businesses to register with the Social Security System (SSS) before releasing a mayor’s permit to help address the growing number of delinquent employers who fail to pay for their workers’ SSS contributions.

Vilma Agapito, SSS vice president for Luzon Central I Division, explained that the Memorandum of Agreement on ease of doing business between LGUs and various agencies provides that employers must first register their employees with the SSS before they can obtain the necessary permits to operate.

However, many LGUs do not comply with this even as the SSS continuously takes steps to remind local officials of the agreed procedures, she said.

At the same time, SSS personnel at the Dagupan City Branch have also been urging employees to monitor and ensure that their employers are paying the correct monthly contributions as part of their benefits.

All SSS members can register and access their records via the official SSS website, sss.gov.ph, to verify the accuracy of their employers’ contributions. (Ahikam Pasion)
