San Carlos City ramps up mango planting
THE San Carlos City government is ramping up the planting of mango trees in response to the noticeable decrease in the number of fruit-bearing trees in recent years.
City Cooperative Entrepreneurship and Livelihood Development Officer Arlaine De Vera explained that the city’s mature mango tree population has gone down by about half to 75,000 from a high of 150,000 due mainly to typhoons.
The decline in trees translated to lower mango production so far this year.
Mango seedlings were planted by the local government at the demonstration farm located in Barangay Nelintap to help recover output in years ahead as well as curb the problem of diseases affecting mangoes like the cecid fly infestation and powdery mildew. (Kim Gealogo)
