BFAR awards two coastal towns P2M each
FOR OUTSTANDING FISHERIES MANAGEMENT
THE municipalities of Anda and Bani were cited for their exemplary efforts in promoting sustainable fisheries management during the Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan (MMK): Search for the Most Outstanding Coastal Community.
The two local governments were honored for their innovative fisheries livelihood projects and their commitment to coastal conservation, and for which both each granted a P2 million prize to further enhance their initiatives during the awarding ceremony, recently held at the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Regional Field Office 1
Anda received its initial P1 million fund for its projects on seaweed, sea urchin, and sea cucumber culture; fish processing and drying; and the acquisition of monitoring boats to ensure sustainable practices.
Bani’s first half of its prize is allocated for the rehabilitation of the Bangrin Pavilion, a Mangrove Marine Protected Area as well as the construction of a view deck. These projects aim to preserve vital marine ecosystems while enhancing eco-tourism and community engagement.
“Their achievements serve as an inspiration to other coastal communities, showcasing the importance of responsible and sustainable fishing practices,” BFAR Regional Director Rosario Gaerlan said, emphasizing the role of local governments in fostering environmental stewardship.
