Cojuangco launches supplemental education program
THE ‘Tara, Basa!’ tutoring Program was officially launched on March 18 at the Pangasinan State University (PSU)-Lingayen campus, led by Second District Rep. Mark Cojuangco who played a pivotal role in bringing the initiative to the capital town.
The event also marked the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to provide educational support to struggling readers while empowering college students as tutors and youth development workers (YDWs).
In his speech, Cojuangco recounted that when he read in a newspaper article about the supplementary educational program under the Department of Social Welfare and Development, he immediately contacted Secretary Rex Gatchalian to ask if it could be rolled out to the region.
“This is a noble cause, and that’s what drew me in to immediately inquire about the program. There’s a saying, ‘Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a person to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.’ This program is about teaching children to read, giving them a skill that will last a lifetime,” he said.
The Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program provides developmental and community-based social protection for low-income families and college students, offering a Cash-for-Work opportunity and also designed to assist struggling readers through community-based tutoring sessions, with parents and guardians receiving P235 per session of attendance.
College student mentors are compensated at the region’s minimum wage rate for each session, which lasts between two to three hours. The program also aims to help students become independent learners, reach academic goals, and prepare for future class materials.
He reiterated his commitment to follow up on the progress of the program, emphasizing that its success will be measured by the results and long-term impact on students’ lives.
Qualified students from PSU Lingayen Campus will be trained as tutors and YDWs.
PSU President Elbert Galas, one of the signatories to the MOA, said, “We look forward to continuing this work together to ensure the program’s long-term success. Let us remember that true success is measured by the lives we touch and the future we create together. (Eva Visperas)
