Capitol’s corporate farming program benefits over 1,400 farmers
THE provincial government’s Pangasinan Corporate Farming Program, initiated by Gov. Ramon Guico III in 2022, now covers 1,272.47 hectares and has benefited 54 farmer-cooperatives with 1,448 individual farmer members.
Provincial Agriculturist Dalisay Moya reported that with the farm aggregation, which promotes production efficiency and shared costs, yield during the dry season has increased from 4.93 metric tons per hectare to 5.10 (MT/ha).
The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist said the program provided input support to farmer-beneficiaries for both rice and corn. In addition, farmer members are given technical training on the control and management of pests, specifically army worms.
“The simple story about corporate farming is that because it is more cost-efficient, higher yield per hectare is achieved with lower cost of production,” said Guico in an earlier interview.
He added that he is setting his sights on transforming agriculture into a sustainable economic enterprise through the so-called convergence approach among farmer cooperatives and associations, local government units (LGUs), national agencies and other line entities, the private sector, and financial institutions.
