SP supports San Roque hydropower projects

THE Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) passed three resolutions on January 13 interposing no objections to key hydropower projects proposed by San Roque Hydropower, Inc. (SRHI), a subsidiary of San Miguel Global Power Corporation.

Ngayong araw po ay pinasa po yung tatlong resolutions of no objections for these three major projects that will directly impact the province of Pangasinan. At sinasuportan naman po natin itong mga proyektong ito, provided they comply of course with the other necessary requirements as set by law,” Vice Governor Mark Lambino, presiding officer, told local reporters.

The three projects include two power generation plants, each capable of generating 800 megawatts (MW), and a third project focused on optimizing the capacity of the existing San Roque Dam hydroelectric facility. These initiatives will be located in the municipalities of San Manuel and San Nicolas.

Lambino said these projects are part of a larger initiative to enhance Pangasinan’s energy infrastructure, both designed to work in tandem with the existing San Roque facilities.

He said the optimization project will improve the efficiency of the current plant, which has the capacity to produce 435 MW but can only generate about 20% of that due to water levels. With this optimization, “we expect to increase production to about 40% even during dry seasons.”

Lambino also clarified that while the new plants will use the water reserves of the San Roque Dam, they will not affect the dam’s irrigation function, which is crucial for managing water flow to downstream agricultural areas.   (Eva Visperas)
