New seafood stalls to rise in city’s Magsaysay Market

THE new majority in the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP), in another special session last December 27, passed an ordinance that established new stalls for fish retailers within the Magsaysay market area, and provided guidelines for their management and operation.

Authored jointly by Councilors Michael Fernandez, Jeslito Seen, Dennis Canto, Marcelino Fernandez, and Bradley Benavides, it was the 27th ordinance passed by the new majority bloc since taking control of the SP following the preventive suspension of three opposition councilors by the Office of the President starting November 5.

The four other opposition councilors who have become the new minority — Councilors Librada Reyna, Alvin Coquia, Marilou Fernandez and Celia Lim — were again a no-show as in the previous special session on December 23 and in two other regular sessions they earlier boycotted, plus a series of walkouts in other previous sessions.

In proposing the measure, the authors cited the need to accommodate the increasing number of seafood vendors in the city, providing a space that would ensure proper sanitation, and give easier access and convenience to the buying public, many of whom come from outside the city and province.

It is seen as an additional seafood trading hub in the city.

The new stalls will be built by the city government at a designated area of the Magsaysay Fish Market and will be rented out to vendors already doing business in the area, provided that they are residents of Dagupan.

Instead of purchasing daily cash tickets to trade at the market as the usual practice today, the seafood vendors will be paying fixed monthly stall rentals. (Leonardo Micua)
