Fish prices surge amid strong amihan winds

AS stronger cold winds blow amid the amihan or northeast monsoon season, many may crave for a warm bowl of fish sinigang, but that culinary delight is becoming less accessible due to rising fish prices.

Recent market monitoring indicates that fish prices have increased by almost 20% to 30%.

Malaga or rabbitfish, for example, current price is P450 to P500 per kilogram, while pompano is priced at P400/k, and galunggong or mackerel scad at P200 /k. Jacks or talakitok and red snapper are higher at P550/k, the same as crabs.

Bangus or milkfish sold for P150 to P170/k last week, up from the usual P130 to P150 on regular days.

Fisherman Ferdie Quimson shared that it has become challenging to venture out to sea due to the strong waves. He added that according to caretaker Tano Delfin from Binmaley, bangus tend to be less active and eat less in colder weather, slowing their growth rates.

Authorities anticipate that fish prices will decrease once the northeast monsoon weakens. (Ahikam Pasion)
