Dagupan, Holcim ink long-term partnership
IMPROVED WASTE MANAGEMENT PLAN
DAGUPAN City sealed a long-term partnership with Holcim Philippines, Inc. for the conversion of the city’s non-recyclable wastes into alternative fuel for the company’s cement plant in Bulacan.
Mayor Belen Fernandez signed the Memorandum of Agreement for and in behalf of the city of Dagupan with top officials of Holcim at the company’s head office in Taguig City on January 18.
Among those who witnessed the signing was Councilor Michael Fernandez who heads the new majority in the Sangguniang Pangasinan that passed the resolution authorizing the mayor to sign the agreement for and in behalf of Dagupan.
It will be recalled that the authorization was shelved earlier by the seven opposition councilors and was only approved when there was a shift of power in the Sanggunian, when the minority bloc seized the majority because of the preventive suspension of three opposition councilors for 60 days starting November 5, 2024.
Dagupan has been delivering its compacted wastes to Holcim Cement Plant in Norzagaray Bulacan since early 2023 based on an initial temporary agreement.
Fernandez said that with the MOA finally signed, Dagupan can now map out plans for the eventual closure of the more than 60-year-old dumpsite in Bonuan and convert it into a tree park.
She has also ordered the City Waste Management Office headed by Bernard Cabison to turn away garbage trucks or garongs delivering non-segregated wastes to the dumpsite in compliance with the city’s commitments to Holcim.
Barangay captains were also told to order households in their respective areas to strictly implement waste segregation right in their homes.
The city recently acquired four brand new dump trucks and is expecting the delivery soon of one backhoe and one payloader to be used for more efficient waste management. (Leonardo Micua)
