Bangus growers cheer latest research on bangus skin
BANGUS growers in Dagupan City are hopeful of new business opportunities after recent research showed bangus skin’s regenerative properties.
Based on an article published by the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Dr. Janice Ragaza and Bianca Patrice Go, researchers from the Ateneo de Manila University, discovered that bangus skin may be used to create artificial skin, which could be patched or grafted onto burned victims.
While this approach has been proven successful with tilapia before, the use of bangus skin is a new innovation.
The use of tilapia skin has been a cost-effective tool for doctors in developing countries.
This could mean that even third-degree burns may be treated with bangus skin.
Tano Delfin, a bangus raiser in Binmaley town, said this discovery expands the use and value of bangus and increase demand, especially once the treatment has been properly embedded in Philippine medicine.
“Kung ganiyan, hindi na lang para sa pagkain ang bangus, pwede rin siyang gamitin panggamot,” he said. (Ahikam Pasion)
