Tomato prices soar to P200/k due to scarce supply

DAGUPAN City resident Nathaniel Jovero will not be making the traditional tomato-based spaghetti sauce for the Christmas feast using fresh tomatoes as the price of the fruit-vegetable has skyrocketed to P200-220 per kilogram in the market, like the price of chicken meat.

The surge in tomato prices is attributed to a significant scarcity in supply as crops were devastated by Typhoon Pepito (international name: Man-yi) last month, which struck Luzon, including the main tomato-producing provinces of Nueva Ecija and Nueva Vizcaya.

Some vendors have reported investments of up to P20,000 to secure their tomato stock and meet the high demand during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Industry stakeholders said there are pressing concerns about both the pricing and supply of tomatoes. However, they anticipate prices to stabilize by next month. (Ahikam Pasion)
